Loreto Convent High School

Loreto Convent High School is located between the villages of Matunda and Moi’s Bridge. Currently the school has 480 students. The principle of the school is Sister Jane Francisca Mulomgo. The school owns some animals and has a recently renovated greenhouse.

From the beginning of January til half November 480 girls study and live at Loreto Convent (Over Christmas they all return to their families). The girls learn different subjects, from mathematics to English and from cooking to agriculture. Families from a widespread area send their daughters to the private school for secondary education. Sister Jane Francisca Mulomgo is the headprinciple of school. Together with other teachers she lives on the school’s premises.

The schools owns 14 cows, 600 chickens and rabbits. All the animals are looked after by the farm keeper, Kenedy. The cows walk free in the field during the day, but are kept in stables at night. The chucks and rabbits are kept in cages. The cows are used for their milk, which is used in the girls’ tea.

Last year a group of three students from Delft University of Technology did an internship at Loreto Convent. They investigated the possibilities for the school. Among them was the improvement of the present greenhouse. The improvements have been succesful as Sister Jane Mulomgo happily mentioned a very fruitful harvest this year.
