We have made a list of rules for our group to reduce the risk that something will happen to us. We are not going outside after sunset, in Kenya that is about 19:00 hour. Whatever happens we stay together as a group . We stay in contact with the local contact person, David Ndegwah, to keep us informed about the situation in Kenya. He can tell us if there is political instability and can estimate the risk we are exposed to as Western people and we will also check the app of the Dutch embassy). Next to that we have to keep our cellphones charged and with enough credit and stay connected all the time, so we can call each other if there is a problem or if we lost a teammate. We assume that everyone respect the rules, but if someone break the rules we talk to him/her and discuss the issues.
We act normal and we do not obviously show that we are Western people and have money. We don’t dress like that and we don’t give extra money to the taxi drivers or any person who we have to pay. If we are in restaurants we stay together while paying.
