Sisters of Loreto

Loreto Convent High School is a Catholic school for girls associated with the Sisters of Loreto, members of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Loreto School is the name of several Catholic schools throughout the world, associated with the Sisters of Loreto. The Sisters of Loreto belong to the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM), which was founded by an English woman called Mary Ward in 1609. Mary Ward left for France because of religous persecution in England. Mary Ward and her companions were dedicated to education, they started their first school in St. Omer, France. They became known as ‘The English Ladies’. (IBVM Ireland, 2105) The congregation takes its name from the Marian Shrine in Loreto, Italy, where Mary Ward used to pray. Nowadays the institute is active all over the world. They are engaged in a variety of ministries which include literacy programmes and spiritual direction. (IBVM United States Province, 2014). There are several schools in Kenya but also some in Mauritius, India, Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
