Behaviour

Personal behaviour and group rules of engagements:

  • Four girls and one guy in Kenya attracts attention
  • Not wearing inappropriate/offensive clothing
  • Try to hide your belongings when travelling/not at home
  • Don’t bring any items of value
  • Share phonenumbers
  • Always know where the others are
  • Personal health cards + emergency numbers, not only in phone but also on paper.
  • We will leave Kenya, in case of war in our area, epidemic diseases, kidnapping and sexual harassment, we will try to catch a flight as soon as possible and otherwise go to a save place across the border by bus or taxi.
  • Do not go out in the night
  • Find out which taxi companies are to be trusted / ask our supervisor if he knows one
  • Always hire a driver
  • Don’t drink tap water and don’t eat food cleaned with unclean water or not boiled water.

Contingency plan

When we encounter an accident we will try to stay as calm as possible. It is best to be completely sure about what is happening before we take any action. We will start with contacting our local contacts in Kenya as they are the most likely to be able to do anything about it. If this proves to be not sufficient we will contact our supervisor in the Netherlands. It depends on how much impact the incident has when we will call our Dutch supervisor. In case of a kidnapping or comparable incident we will directly call the S&S department of the TU Delft. But first we call the crisis service of the insurance since they can, next to oure local contacts, help us best. Also in case of claims they do need to be contacted.

Accomodation plan

We will be staying in the staff accommodation on the university campus. When we arrive there we will check the emergency exits and formulate different escape routes. The accommodation provided for us is reliable because our supervisor in Kenya has arranged this and the accommodation is on the University so this will be a safe terrain. We will be staying in the same apartment as the previous group from last year, this arrangement is already be made.

For the projects we will need to do research in the region. In this case, we will use motorbikes, we will not drive ourselves, so someone will take us to the different locations.

In case of travelling within Kenya on the weekends, for instance, there is public transport we can use. We will stay nearby our minor internship area. The previous group has assured us that this is doable. If we want to travel to an area far from the internship area we will do it in our own time, not as a part of the minor.
