In the past PPHPZ has experimented with low-cost building materials. They constructed a house made out of sandbags with a wooden skeleton, a low-cost and locally available material. These natural resource are widely available in the Western Province and can be used in a sustainable way to construct houses cheaply. However, the building made in this area functioned as a model houses, to educate the local people about the possibilities of local resources.
The project with the sandbag buildings has resulted in two houses in the region of Mongu and Senanga that are still in use. Despite the good work of PPHPZ of educating the local people how to build this sandbag houses, since then there haven’t been build any new sandbag houses or buildings. We may conclude that therefore the sandbag building project is not as successful as expected.
