The project’s objective is to achieve sustainable development in Ghana, particularly in the agriculture sector. Sustainable development is achieved when development is financially, socially and ecologically responsible. Social responsibility means that profits from the project are shared equally among the involved partners and employees. This also includes equity, participation and human rights for the local stakeholders. (Vastbinder, 2012)
The HortiTerra project is supposed to be an example greenhouse which will show how agriculture can be a profitable sector to work in. This should bring about broader development in the whole Ghanaian agriculture. Not only technically but by involving the youth also the image of agriculture will be improved. But also the general creation of employment is a very important social revenue. People might have to change their lifestyle to learn and work in the greenhouse, but they will be able to provide for themselves and their families in the future. By the education centre the knowledge on greenhouse farming is brought to Ghanaians. The broader change described earlier can be achieved when students start their own greenhouse companies and train their own employees.
Lastly, the greenhouse cannot operate without its local suppliers and key partners. The greenhouse will use local products and service and therefore stimulate the local economy. The key partners businesses have a chance to grow. Therefore, the local employment rate will increase and locals will have more financial means. Ultimately, the whole local economy will be boosted.
