Sustainable Entrepreneurship Kenya

The article briefly examines the current state of sustainable entrepreneurship in Kenya.

Entrepreneurship in developing countries is different. The Time recently released an article which listed Kenya's 2015 start-up stars and we discovered a certain pattern. Positively surprised we can argue that all of the projects have either social or environmental revenues. Entrepreneurship is different here. People are driven by the socio-economic inequalities within their country. Many of these project involves technical innovations that improve living standards for people or the country’s infrastructure. Our favorite ones are listed below.

SteamaCo is a company that has the intention of making electricity more available to remote rural areas. Via micro grids they have created new infrastructure, they reach areas which always would be ignored by the government and have to go without the national power supply. SteamaCo has changed this and the area is thriving.

Another big issue, that was left unchanged until now is the harmfulness of charcoal when is used by Kenyans for smoking on a daily basis. GreenChar is not only more environmental friendly in terms of its emissions, it is also less harmful for the user and reduces health risks.

There are so many inspiring entrepreneurial projects that only require slight changes and effectively have immense environmental and socio-economic benefits. We hope that our project can contribute to this trend in a similar way.
