Political & Economic institutions
The institutions relevant for this project are PPHPZ, the Zambian Government, partners of PPHPZ and the TU Delft.
PPHPZ
This will be our most important institution during this project. This non-governmental organization has 43 projects sites spread over the country working on the housing problem among the poorest layers of society. One of the core task of PPHPZ is to educate people on how to build their own houses and is therefore an inclusive institution.
The Zambian Government
The Zambian Government is one of the partners of PPHPZ and will play a role in any project PPHPZ wants to realize. The political situation in Zambia is steady, it’s a democracy and ellaction are held peacefully. That’s why the government can be seen as an inclusive institution. They also support PPHPZ in their mission to address the housing problem and to educate the Zambian people about the possibilities of constructing their own houses. However, the Zambian government can also be seen as an extractive institution because of the fact that the government profits from the work done by PPHPZ to reduce the housing problem.
Partners of PPHPZ
The work PPHPZ does is made possible by their partners such as, SDI (Slum Dwellers International) and Cordaid. These partners act out of ideologies and are non-profit organizations. Financial support and knowledge diffusion are the core businesses of the partners and that is why they can be seen as important inclusive institutions.
TU Delft
The TU Delft can be seen as an inclusive and extractive institution. By sending a group of students, knowledge is transferred to Zambia. Research will be done that is useful for PPHPZ this leads to the TU Delft to be an inclusive institution. Nevertheless, the students also gain experience in Zambia which is taken back to the Netherlands and therefore can be seen as an extractive activity.
