Chapter 2.4 How to redefine the design gap

The YUPTA framework is filled in (paragraph 2.2) and the design gaps are noted (paragraph 2.3). In this paragraph a brief explanation will be given in order to show how these design gaps can be elaborated. Besides, a redefinition of the main design challenge will be given.

For the situation of a more sustainable lifestyle, change is required. Both Planet and Profit locals have to come together and cooperate in a pro-environmental way. The current gaps between both local types has to be closed. Design for presences and values is needed. Which directions that could be? That is represented in the following in order to steer them both to the right direction.

Hereto the three different dimensions, mentioned in the previous paragraph, are further described in detail.

Firstly, the dimension of time is examined. Both candidates have moments to signify, do synchronize performance and have certain duration of engagement. On the contrary, the aspects where they focus on are different. The difference is in their names; planet locals are planet focused, and profit locals see the more profit the better. In relation to the literature study, it suits both locals that they seek for well-being and are therefore engaged to their work. The ambitions of the planet locals should extensively be elaborated into tangible goals wherein profit locals can join. On the other hand, planet locals are challenged to deal with the synchronized performance of the profit locals during winter and summer time.

A second challenge is the willingness and the duration of engagement for both planet and profit locals. Relating to the literature, short-term projects seem to be most attractive for hedonic minded people such as the profit locals. They work with high- and low season and don’t look beyond, so their engagement in short-term initiatives is quite high . To find a balance between this short-term vision and the long term initiatives of the planet locals is required.

An other dimensions mentioned, is the one of the relation the locals have to one and another. It seems both are very well aware of their role as pro-environmental local or profit focused person. It will be a challenge for both to see it as duty as Texel citizen to cope with these firm but different roles. One should come close to each other in order to set goals for a self-sufficient Texel 2065.

The last dimension will be the one of action wherein the negotiation seem to be a challenge of presence. Both groups stands for itself and are strongly willing to negotiate. The planet locals negotiate in signs already, with green and sustainable advertisements in professional settings. While putting their own projects in the centre of interest, others are forgotten. The profit locals should take part in these projects too, and should be letten into this.

In the previous chapter, the research question had his focus on the interaction between the lifestyles of the Planet-Locals and the Profit-locals in Texel society in such way, the self-sufficiency of Texel 2065 could be reached. Now, packed with more knowledge about the subject, our problem statement can be redefined. Herein of great importance is the role both groups already have of their own and how they both can steer into a cooperative direction. With short-term initiatives both hedonistic and eudaimonic focused locals can show same engagement. A clear communication wherein both parties notice and actually negotiate with others will be a key-instrument. A wait and see attitude should be transformed into an attitude of actual tackling problems. This can be stated into a new main question wherein the understandance of the different roles and perspectives exist on the future well-being. To gain more trust, one should collaborate in initiatives and respect each others role.

In sum, the current and future situation regarding presence and well-being are set up. With the help of the YUPTA framework the relation, action and time dimensions are further elaborated wherein differences between engagement, role and negotiations are noted. The design will focus on this to bring both planet and profit local closer. Both their lifestyle will merge into a more sustainable one. Their hedonistic views corresponds with their long-term visions where personal presence and communal trust will be key-notes.
