2.2 Description of daily life in waste sub-system

In this paragraph a description of the daily life in the current sub-system of a waste is given on the basis of the YUPTA framework. This framework is used in order to analyze how different actors perform their presence and which results in a specific trust.Four actors have been chosen to describe the daily life in this subsystem. Tourist, current citizen of Texel and companies on Texel, like restaurants, which are all waste producers. And one waste collecter, HVC.

Tourist

Tourist are relaxed and happy when they are on the island, since they are there to enjoy their holiday. Their duration of stay and rhytm are quite predictable and stable throughout the year, but also throughout a day. They will stay for a week or two in the spring or summer period. During the day they will spend the day visiting areas on the island, while returning in the late afternoon to their accomodations.

Tourist play a big role in the waste system, since they produce a lot of waste. But their relation with the other actors on the island is not of importance at this moment. They have a bad reputation and are not engaged in the waste system. They are willing to help, but want something in return for their actions.

Companies on Texel (restaurants, etc)

The companies on Texel visited by a lot of tourists, have a significant role in the subsystem waste. These tourists produce a lot of waste, that is collected by the companies. This waste is currently not separated because the municipality is not picking it up. They are treated differently by the municipality which gives them a low reputation, engagement and communion feeling.

The companies probably don´t separate the waste, because it´s now easier and cheaper to collect it all together. They could separate, but they want something in return.

Citizen

Also the citizens of Texel play a significant role in the system. But in comparison to the other actors, they have a high reputation, engagement and communion feeling. They like their island and want to take care of it together, cause they are proud to live there. Their daily life rhythm is quite the same and they are in the same mood. They are depending on the environment and they can´t do much to influence the situation. They would like to do more for the waste system, but they also want money for it.

HVC

HVC is the main waste collecting company, so they have a large role in the subsystem. They are picking up the waste from the household, but as said, not from companies. This is funded by the government. They could pick it up from the companies as well, but they won’t receive a fund for that. HVC is also depending a lot on the environment, like the infrastructure that is on the island, but also on the separation rate of the households.
