Our goal is getting from a linear system to a closed loop system. A meeting farm will be designed to represent an example of this concept.
For a closed loop system the combination of individual and collective pathways are necessary. The collective pathway is the most suitable for the efficiency on Texel. All the actors in the sub-system of organic matter are working together on improving the sustainability of the management of organic matter. The management of companies, logistic organisation managed by the municipality and effort of inhabitants and tourist should change to make the system working. This is a long term goal.To show the working of the collective pathway of the closed loop system, the meeting farm will be set up.
Future plans concerning organic matter are at collective level are:
- Organic output is used for a breeding ground
- Use of local products of Texel
- Processing of organic matter on Texel itself
- Consuming of organic matter on Texel itself
- Organic output will be collected
- The quality of organic output will be checked
- Organic output will be separated if necessary
- Organic output will be processed and reused
For the intrinsic motivation of people to change to sustainable behaviour, the individual pathway should be used. Aspects should be taken into account that motivate people on the short term. The direct results of actions can be a motivating aspect. This is difficult to realize in collective pathways and possible to realize in individual pathways.
A further interesting aspect to take into account is rewarding above punishment. Reward as a motivating element can drive people to start an continue behaviour. Another reason why we decided to focus on rewarding is that punishment can be fraud sensitive.
Future plans concerning organic matter are at individual level are:
- Organic output is used for a breeding ground
- Food production will take place in the direct surroundings: gardens of households and companies will be used.
- Processing of organic matter at home or in companies itself
- Consuming of organic matter at home or in companies itself
- Organic output will be collected at home or in companies itself
- Organic output will be separated
- Organic output will be processed and reused
The use of compost containers will help individuals to process their organic output. To maximize the separation of organic matter have direct effect on the quality of compost. The direct result good be a rewarding or punishing factor for the user.
The Design Proposal
The farm project on small scale will be a role model for Texel. The Farm will be an experiment centre that focusses on education of sustainable behaviour, show room for new insights, experimental location for try-outs and collecting centre for experiences and ideas.
The concept is explained in the following drawing.
