A sustainable innovation that is started by the government or large firms can create influence and grow much faster than grassroot innovation. However, it may miss the specific contextual challenges and also face difficulties with the public acceptance.

Texel’s sustainability goals can be achieved through hybrid innovations, by taking the best of the two conceptual groups (grassroot and industrial).

An ‘in-between’ approach that has principles, and possibly the benefits, of both sides (green industrialisation and grassroot innovations)

By using the benefits of hybrid innovations Texel could possible profit the most. In this case both community and municipality are actively engaged.

Marlien

A type of innovation that contains elements of both grassroot innovations and green industrialisation, allowing them to take profit from both formal top-down R&D focussed innovation and from bottom-up, community-driven experimentation.

This type of innovation is suitable for Texel, because the support from the municipality advances the process. At the same time, Texelaars want to feel engaged and heard; they want to have impact on the innovation process from their community-driven experiments.

Are sustainable innovations that mix grassroot innovation and green industrialization concepts, operating “across all dimensions”.

The hybrid approach might be the most adequate to be applied in the Texel context. As it creates more engagement by the actors (as it is usually bottom-up) and can be very context specific; with the advantage of being able to generate financing in non-standard ways like crowdsourcing or venture capital.

Sustainable transitions in Texel need several possible pathways to be achieved. This can increase the likelihood for the changes to happen and the vision to be achieved.

Are routes which consist of several steps that could be followed to get from a current to a desired, more sustainable, state.

The desired sustainable transition that we want to happen for Texel could be achieved in many different ways and will probably even change along the way, we should keep this in mind.

Marlien

The process from the current state towards the future state, depending on kinds and timing of multi-level interactions. The pathway is gradually adjusted all the time.

For Texel, we need to design an approach for reaching the desired future state. However, we know that this approach is never fully executed, because the pathway will experience changes in environment, due to which an adjusted approach is required.

Rafael

Are the different paths, considering distinct contexts which allow a sustainable transition to take place.

There are multiple different ways for a sustainable transition to happen. By understanding the different factors, we are able to create a strategy that opens the possibilities for our sustainable transition to happen.
