5.2 Expectations and potential tensions with other sub-systems within sustainable Texel.

As all the different sub-systems are part of the same system, they are interconnected. The role of the sub-system we have been working on “How to get there” is, on an essence, about the creation of efficient connections and communication between locations. To achieve sustainability in mobility and also work towards the success of the other parts of the system, we need people to realize how important it is to become sustainable, adjust their lifestyles and see the new chances that are coming together with the integration of sustainability. Therefore, we have pointed out some linkages with other some system that we consider as important within this process of sustainable development in Texel.

• Sustain lifestyles

The way people choose to transport is basically based on habits and habits are influenced on a certain extend by lifestyles. Changes in the mobility system demand changes in daily life. Therefore, shifting people’s interest towards collective transport, car-sharing and cycling is hard work and potentially can be done via introducing new ways of living and new habits to be integrated in people’s lifestyle. Differently someone could say that sustainable mobility is a link within the chain of sustainable lifestyle circle.

• Sustainable entrepreneurship

The future of mobility includes important transitions where Sustainable entrepreneurship is a factor of great importance for the efficient function of mobility system. The reason for this is that all the different elements involved in the mobility system, from the roads infrastructure to the vehicles in use demand economic sources and also bring significant profit to some of the stakeholders. Within this context it is clear that it is essential to create an efficient structure towards entrepreneurship and sustainability within the mobility system. From our point of view the goal is to inspire and guide the new entrepreneurs and start-up companies that will get involved towards being creative and respectful to the environment and the users. The danger created if this does not happen is for the powerful stakeholders to lose track from the sustainable vision, being focused on the greatest possible economical profit.

• Permanently innovate

Initially, it was our plan to raise the awareness of people in Texel about how mobility in Texel could become much more sustainable and why it is important for their health and freshness to decrease the use of car and adopt a more active behavior. As permanently innovate works on communicating sustainability it is in our belief that our topics overlap.

• Accommodate community

The question for our group is “How to get there”. Undoubtedly these two sub-systems, “How to get there and “accommodate community” meet each other at many points. As the pathways of that sub-system are focused on creating new, winter attractions or eco-tourism, probably the mobility grid needs to be developed towards this direction too. Therefore these too sub-systems can be developed together towards the extension of providing the island with good connections, between the main points of interest.

• Go emission free

Undoubtedly our topic overlaps with this one. However, this section is not being developed.

To close-up with, during the bubble week we will have the chance to work on these linkages and note if our expectations meet those of the other sub-systems and also the desires of Texel municipality.
