5.2 Expectations and tensions with other research groups

Accommodate community
Linkages:
The tourist industry has such a huge impact on the Island by doubling the amount of inhabitants during the summer months, that it could be attractive for entrepreneurs to combine a sustainable showcase with tourist visits. This group's pathways describe an increasing amount of tourism during low season, which would make the island more attractive for entrepreneurs year round.

Potential misfit:
On the other hand, it could slow the process of sustainable entrepreneurship down, since they might be afraid that severe changes on the island could interfere with the visits of the  tourist. Since tourism is such a huge market for the island, the visitors posses a great deal of influence on the potential transition of Texel.

Feed Texel
Linkages:
Agriculture is, next to tourism, a very large scaled profession on the island. There are already some examples of local food companies which we can classify as sustainable entrepreneurs by the product they bring on the market. With the given size of the island and the amount of inhabitants Texel is rich, we believe that sustainable entrepreneurism can play a huge role in making Texel food self-sufficient.

Potential misfit:
Since we know that the entrepreneurs of agriculture are represented by a platform which represents all provinces above the Maas river, it could be a difficult sector to decentralize as we desire in one of our pathways.

How to get there
Linkages:
Each innovative idea about transportation in a durable way can go hand in hand with local entrepreneurs to get such a project off the ground. We believe that the size of Texel is ideal for a fully smart sustainable way of transportation, and the group shows some very promising ideas. The ferry between Texel and the mainland shows a very early form of crowdfunding amongst the inhabitants of Texel and this is something we could see happening more and more from the perspective of sustainable entrepreneurs.

Potential misfit:
If this subsystem sees it necessary to ban cars completely from entering the island, it could damage the island's infrastructure and therefore damage the network which is necessary for a healthy environment for entrepreneurs.

Live with the sea
Linkages:
Again, any idea about using the sea as a fruitful environment for sustainable products or goods goes hand in hand with a local entrepreneurship and is therefore very interesting within the subsystem of sustainable entrepreneurship. Since the Texelaars are so connected to the sea, these potential companies are very likely to be widely accepted by the inhabitants of the island and therefore really fit in our pathways to sustainable entrepreneurship.

Potential misfit:

Organic matter matters
Linkages:
This team refers to the establishment of a farm as exposition towards inhabitants and tourists to address the individual pathway. This farm, together with all businesses necessary to produce, process, check, separate and consume organic matters on the island within the collective pathway shows great potential for entrepreneurs to get them involved in the process.

Potential misfit:
One of the conclusions of the future system will be big changes for management of companies and logistics around them on multiple levels. If not guided in the right way, this could pose a threat towards the entrepreneurs and put them a step behind competition from the mainland and beyond.

Permanently innovate
Linkages:
This sub-system obviously shows some similarities with ours as sustainable entrepreneurship will flourish due to innovative breakthroughs in the market. Entrepreneurs are willing to take chances by bringing high potential products to the customers. We also see linkages when it comes to proud island inhabitants who are willing to participate in sustainable projects, as long as they are heavily involved and not dominated by other actors from the mainland.

Potential misfit:
Since there are no universities on the island, most innovations will come from the mainland or further and this is where a threat occurs. The implementation of new technologies only seem to work when the inhabitants accept them and control them themselves, so this could form a barrier for some innovations to reach entrepreneurs on the island.

Regenerate inorganic waste
Linkages:
Within this subsystem, the expected future shows no waste going off the island anymore since there is a closed loop within the island borders. This would mean that there lies potential for local entrepreneurs to form chains within this closed loop. From separation to the transportation, recycling and reusing of waste, everywhere lies potential for a sustainable entrepreneur with a golden idea.

Potential misfit:
Creating a closed loop of inorganic waste on the island could mean that this becomes visual towards the public. If not handled in a proper way, this could influence the boundary conditions in which entrepreneurships have to work. If some materials would be banned or discouraged from the island due to the impossibility of treatment of these materials, this could lead to higher costs for sustainable entrepreneurs who thrive by the usage of these materials and could therefore be hindered in doing business.

Sustain lifestyles
Linkages:
The main goal from this group seems to be formulated as 100% local food, since food is a repeating and central aspect in all lifestyles. We have already addressed this topic at Feed Texel and will therefore not elaborate on that any further. We do believe that this sub-system shares the desire of incorporating knowledge amongst the inhabitants and visitors to actually establish a sustainable transition. This is one of the key elements within our pathways as well.

Potential misfit:
A possible path which is written by this groups suggest stimulation of a 100% locally produced items and services by using economic instruments, such as an incentive model or transportation tax. These economic instruments can easily disrupt the climate in which entrepreneurs are working, both in positive and negative ways.

Teach your own

Linkages:
This subsystem really links to our vision on knowledge sharing and platforms to exchange this on. We believe that this is an essential part of a sustainable transition and we believe that sustainable entrepreneurs could benefit enormously if this is incorporated in Texels future vision.

Potential misfit:
The local education on the island needs to be organised properly in order to keep the level of knowledge taught high.
