Spar supermarket at Den Hoorn, Texel

A conservation wherein we try to analyse why locals do or don't buy local products.

Local products @Spar

Walking around in this local supermarket, the amount of local products surprised us – salt potatoes and other vegetables, Texel cheese, biscuits and sweets and so on - while it is a franchise of Spar where you would only expect typical sparproducts. Nontheless, the local products were displayed and presented in an obvious way. Like the Texel Dit weekend already mentioned “Spar in den Hoorn, bekend vanwege de verkoop van vele Texelse producten” (Saal, 2016) A short interview with the woman behind the desk showed us that Texelaars are very connected to their supermarket, in their small community, in such way that they visit easily, sometimes even make several small visits a day. According to the cashier most of the Texel products are bought by tourists. “Locals normally don’t buy them since the products are more expensive than other”. The women, described like a consumer, preferred the cheap, easy products.

  • Local products seem to be in shops preferably for tourists, since they like to by Texel stamped products.
  • Small communities experience short connections between neighbours and locals
