Meeting Mampe

Date: 3-12-2015

Duration: 15.00- 16.20

Participants:

-        Steven Roerink (team member)

-        Eva ten Velden (team member)

-        Mampe (Owner of the pig farm)

Timeline:

  • Sit down at the barn were Mampe organises a church every Sunday.
  • Talking about the NGO of Mampe.
  • Asking some questions about the farm

NGO:

  • Mampe organises a church every Sunday
  • She goes around different townships in the neighbourhood to get everyone to the church
  • From Friday till Sunday she teaches the youth about God.

Animals:

  • Mampe owns different types of animals:

o   Sheep

o   Cows

o   Dogs

o   Donkey

o   Pigs; this is what runs the farm

  • The exact number of animals was difficult to estimate. Mampe said that she has 250 pigs, and when the new pig houses will be finished she wants to add 300 pigs to that amount.
  • There are three pig houses in construction since 2012 and Mampe hopes that they will be finished in March 2016

Business:

  • It takes 150 days to grow a pig
  • The pregnancy of a pig takes 3 month, 3 weeks, 3 days
  • After giving birth, the mother pig has to be pregnant again in 4 days.
  • Mampe wants to sell 100 pigs a week, for now she sells 40 pigs a week. She is trying to close the circle
  • “if you don’t have a circle, you don’t have a business”

Manure:

  • Mampe made an estimation about the quantity of the manure à 2 tons a day.
  • The manure is collected in a dam next to the farm.
  • Mampe throws it on her field because she doesn’t know what to do with it. She wants to have a biogasdigester as soon as possible for her own use. She needs light and heating in the pig houses and also light and gas for cooking in her own house.

Digester:

  • Mampe doesn’t have enough money to build a digester now.
  • “I wanted it yesterday”
  • She knows she has enough manure to provide electricity for all the (heating)lamps and she is willing to share her manure with us.
  • She said she need at least heating for 1 or 2 pig houses, and lights for 5 houses.

Nale abattoir:

  • This is 28 km away
  • She brings her pigs here
  • This abattoir is too far away to be a relevant biomass supplier.
