Meeting Sewage Treatmanagement Devon STI
Date: 1-12-2015
Duration: 10.00- 11.00 (when we arrived we had to wait 15 minutes before Umpa arrived at the STI)
Participants:
- Steven Roerink (team member)
- Eva ten Velden (team member)
- Umpa Machana (Manager of the treatment installation)
Timeline:
- Waiting for Umpa to arrive
- Walking around the sewage treatment installation, while taking pictures and asking questions.
Water:
- The water comes from the townships
- There is no industrial water, because there is no industry nearby Devon.
o Umpa told us about the planning of opening a mine between Devon and Leandra, but this will take years from now.
- When the STI is done with the water it goes downstream to another town, Vaal Dam, where it is purified and made into drinking water.
- There is no way that we can use this water because if we do there will be less drinking water and there is already not enough.
Waste:
- The waste comes with the water from the townships
- Everything goes thru the sewage treatment installation
- Than the water goes to the purification system downstream and the waste goes into big basins.
- The waste will dry in this basins and after that the waste get burned and buried in the field because no one is interested in the waste.
Quantity:
- Umpa has no clue how much waste the treatment installation produces.
- He made an estimation. Two of the four basins are filled in one month.
- We made an estimation about the volume of the basins. 1*5*10 m à 50 m3 per month
- This amount of waste is only available once a month.
- The STI tests only the amount oxygen in the waste.
Municipality:
- Located in Heidelberg
- The municipality does all the licencing for the STI in Devon
- If we are interested in collecting the waste, we have to visit the municipality and make arrangements with them instead of the STI
