Location
- The prison is located next to Kruger Feedlot at approximately 10 kilometer from the Chicken Chain Farm.
General Info on the Prison
- Around 300 prisoners are kept at the prison and this will expandtoapproximately700prisoners.
- The prison is a part, together with two other prisons, of the so-called Modderbee Prison. In total this prison keeps around 6000 prisoners. The other two prisons are located in Nigel (+- 50 km) and Heidelburg (+- 70km)
Biomass Supply
- The prison can supply biomass in the form of food waste, cattle dung and potentially sewer/residential waste.
- Food waste:
o The food waste is currently given away to a farmer for free as pig feed, two times a week.
o The food waste differs in both quantity (the prisoners do not always like the food, seasonal influences, and so on) and quality (menu varies per day).
o Bosasa is the company that manages the catering (In the prison of Devon but also of those in Modderbee and Nigel). Mr. Mhlanga proposed to plan a follow up meeting at the prison with Bosasa. Bosasa can give detailed information about the quality, quantity and costs of the food and oil waste. For now the team knows that the biggest food leftovers are those of pap. The team also knows that there is menu circle, this circle has the length of 12 day. Around two times in this circle the menu contains fried fish (which is fried in oil).
o There has to be applied for a contract before april. Now (November – December) is the right time to do it. A contract normally covers 12 months.
- Cattle dung:
o When we drove with Mr. Mhlanga to the sewage treatment installation we found out by chance that the prison holds 286 cattle.
o The cattle stays during day and night in the crawl except for the morning.
o It is unknown if the prison is prepared to supply the cattle dung. This has to be discussed in a follow up meeting.
- Residential waste:
o This waste stream is treated and processed by the sewage treatment installation. The municipality also collects a part of this waste stream. Mr. Mhlanga will try to get more information, that is on the quality and quantity, on these waste streams (see follow-up questions & comments). As far as the team’s understanding goes the human excreta are treated and processed by the sewage treatment installation. The other part of the residential waste is collected by the municipality.
Follow-Up Questions
- Monday morning 22/11/15, around 7.00 AM, the team will call Mr. Mhlanga to make an (informal) appointment with Mr. Mhlanga and a representative of Bosasa.
- In this appointment the quality, quantity and possible costs of the food waste have to be clarified.
- In this appointment there has to be discussed if the prison is willing to supply cattle dung and residential waste and in what manner this will be done.
Furthermore, the questions of the questionlist (the appendix in the “To Do” document) have to be asked in the next meeting. In that way the team will get enough information about the quality and quantity of the cattledung.
