The prison can supply in foodwaste and cattle manure
Food waste
- Bosasa is the company managing the catering of the prison in Devon also the prisons of Modderbee (45 km of Devon) and Nigel (25 km of Devon).
- If the CCFA wants to collect food waste of the prison, CCFA also has to collect the food waste of the prisons in Modderbee and Nigel
- The quantity of the food waste of the prisons are:
o Around 750 liters per day in Devon
o 1200 liters per day in Nigel (rough estimation)
o … liter per day in Modderbee
- The quality of the food waste in the prisons of Devon, Nigel and Modderbee are mostly the same. The food waste consists mostly of pap, (frying) fat, vegetables, soft pourage(?) and is all mixed together.
- The prison can not guarantee the quality of the food waste, because the inmates are likely to throw all sorts of waste in the food waste when cleaning. A research sample is needed to be taken by the project team to determine the quality of the food waste.
- A truck with a container is needed to collect the food waste. The containers are the responsibility of the prison.
- It is free to collect the waste at the prison.
Cattle manure
- Since the prison Head of Chief was busy, he told we had to mail our project details and our interests to Edward.barnard@dcs.gov.za Devon Comechard Centre (0176889103) (082438186).
- +/- 90 tons a year. Can only be collected once a year. The price handled now is 8 ZAR per kg.
- The cattle is used for red meat for the three prisons in Devon, Nigel and Modderbee.
Follow-Up Questions
- Gather more information about the cattle dung via mail.
- What is the exact quantity of foodwaste of all prisons.
When are we collecting a foodwaste sample for research.
