Peer Review Assignment 2

VSD

So here comes our final assignment and it will be about autonomous weapons. In Section 7.3 we explained the ethical questions and the policy recommendations. So how can we translate this into a Values Hierarchy matrix for VSD? (Click here for a quick refresher on the Values Hierarchy matrix.)

We ask you to do 2 things

  • Briefly indicate what the main moral dilemmas and risks are when we speak of autonomous weapons. You will find a lot of information on the Internet. Please include at least 2 references (with hyperlinks) and also  consider what you have learnt in the course so far (see rubric below)
  • To try to fill in this matrix (see below: Values Hierarchy matrix for biofuels as shown in Section 7.2.
To get you started: responsibility is one of the key values for this assignment.

How to upload  your contribution?

  • You can use the textbox below and add an image (value hierarchy) or
  • Upload a PDF.
  • For uploads: see below the 'textbox' . Click on ' Browse' to select your file, then click on ' Upload'  your file.
  • Once you have filled in the textbox or  uploaded your file, click on Submit your response and move to next step.

Please check the deadlines (see Introduction Section 7). We strongly encourage you to complete this stage at least 48 hours before the deadline for the whole assignment (including the peer reviews) on 6 June 2016 at 23.00 hrs. UTC.

Good luck, and do note that this assignment is meant to make you think about - and apply - the concept of VSD. You may even get addicted :)

This is our rubric for assessing your assignments:

  • Quality of the contributions: are proper references made to previously discussed issues, dilemmas and frameworks? For example, do you recognize notions of  the ‘trolley problem' or  ‘ought implies can‘? Do you see connections to decision-making in terms of humans versus machines? Do you see links to our discussions about risks and future technologies as we dealt with in Weeks  3 and 4  of the course.
    Weight: 40%.
  • The paper includes at least two reliable references  (add the links in your paper and say a few words why you selected them).
    Weight: 10%
  • Quality of the VSD matrix: what is the quality of the VSD matrix? Is the template filled in a clear way? Do you recognize any links to the recommendations made in the reading The Regulation of Robotic WeaponsDid it give you food for thought?
    Weight: 50%.
