FOLI (there is no movement without rhythm)

A research film in the original version by Thomas Roebers and Floris Leeuwenberg. “Foli” is the word used for rhythm by the Malinke tribe in West Africa. But Foli is not only found in Malinke music, but in all parts of their daily lives. Directed by Thomas Roebers, this short film portrays the people of Baro, a small town in eastern-central Guinea, and gives you a glimpse inside their culture of rhythm. As the Malinke man says, “Tous les choses, c’est du rythme.” (“Everything is rhythm.”)

Life has a rhythm. It is constantly moving! Celebrating rhythm as a core manifestation of life, Rhythm (Foli) There is no Movement without Rhythm was filmed during one month in the town of Baro in Eastern-Central Guinea in West Africa. Edited to mimick the rhythm used by the Malinke tribe, this film manifests this movement through the simplest gesture to the escalating, pulsating beats of the djembe drumming and celebratory dances of Baro.

Dutch filmmaker Thomas Roebers, Co-Director of the film shares this statement on the film:

Life has a rhythm, it’s constantly moving.
The word for rhythm ( used by the Malinke tribes ) is FOLI.
It is a word that encompasses so much more than drumming, dancing or sound.
It’s found in every part of daily life.
In this film you not only hear and feel rhythm but you see it.
It’s an extraordinary blend of image and sound that
feeds the senses and reminds us all how essential it is.
