As a part of our course Caroline, David and Maartje created an interactive assignment. With this assignment students applied a Contructive Technology Assessment on their assigned theme from The Life Fair.
A tool for Contructive Technology Assessment is developing scenarios. In the assignment, groups consisting of 4 to 5 students identified two values for their technological innovation within their theme. Then they placed the two values on x-y-axes, and developed two scenarios. The first scenario is their Top scenario, in this scenario the two values developed in the most positive way. The second scenario is the Flop scenario, where the two values developed negatively and therefore had a negative impact on society.
The two scenarios were presented by the groups by acting out these scenarios. These performances were filmed and these films can be found in this collection.
The student feedback on the assignment was mainly positive. The performances turned out funny. The assignment asked for creativity and imagination and this helped students to think in an abstract way about the positive and negative impacts the technology could have on society.
