Intercultural Internship (WM0927 - 15 ECTS)

The internship takes place in a developing country preferably in a company, NGO or any other international or intercultural context. The questions to be dealt with can relate to design problems, policy decisions or, in general, Science, Technology and Society issues.

Course Contents

The students are required to connect their experiences in their practical assignments to Technology Dynamics approaches, especially in terms of socio-technical systems, technological regimes and/or innovation systems. They should in addition be able to assess the influence of cultural differences on the management of technology and policy issues. There should be a mutual exchange and influence of TPM approaches and the actual problems and tasks, which the internship implies. The internship aims at the integration of knowledge and experience in the personal capacities of the students and the integration of a diversity of theoretical tools in view of practical problems and situations. Such an exchange between theory and practice should both fine-tune conceptual and theoretical approaches and put practical questions in such a perspective.

Study Goals

The students are able:

1. to work on sociotechnical problems,

2. to deal with such problems within the framework of a systems approach (technology dynamics)

3. to deal with the impact of cultural diversity on the management of technology effectively and tactically,

4. to reflect on their personal performance in this process.

Education Method

Preferably three months before the internship starts the students start the process of selection and negotiation on the actual content of the internship assignment: which context, which technology, with whom and supervised by whom? This process results in an internship agreement form, which summarizes the assignment. When the course manager has agreed to this assignment, the internship can start. Halfway the internship the students report back on the progress they make addressing all the issues mentioned in that assignment. They receive feedback from the course manager and other supervisors. The final report should reflect the study goals and the different aspects of that assignment.

Assessment

Assessment of internship report in consultation with internship coordinators.

Remarks

The internship usually takes place in the form of a three months stay abroad, as a guest and fulfilling an assignment of a client organization. Internships are available through the minor coordinator and the related internship coordinator, but students can also come up with an internship themselves.
