JOOUST University
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) is situated in Bondo within Siaya County on Bondo Usenge Road. The University is poised to be a premier institution of higher learning, offering relevant and market driven academic programmes of good quality, in order to steer Socio-economic development. The University is strategically located at the quiet serene beaches of Lake Victoria. The focus is on the development of Kenya’s cultural heritage through the utilization of the vast natural resources for academic advancement and research purposes. Those researches will be used for improving the socio-economic status of communities. The location of the University is not only friendly for pursuit of academic excellence and scholarship. JOOUST intends to be a centre of excellence in training, research and community outreach services offering practical and market oriented courses, (jooust.ac.ke).
The university in Bondo will provide room for greenhouses in their yard. They have over 5000 students to feed, so food provision is an important need. The students from this university are open to learning new capabilities and entrepreneurial skills. The university is also ‘socially embedded’ in the community. They can use the yield of the greenhouses for their own kitchen. The greenhouses provide knowledge and practical teaching methods for the students in both greenhouse farming and entrepreneurship. Also letting local farmers use the university will provide goodwill at the community. One aspect to pay attention to is the hierarchy in the Kenyan communities which is also present at the University. Our team needs to be careful and respectful when associating with the University.
Students 4 Sustainability
Students4Sustainability is a student organization from Delft with one very clear goal: investing in sustainable technologies in Third world countries. S4S invests in innovative, sustainable technical projects and promotes the application of sustainable technology in the life and work of the future generation engineers. Students4Sustainability allows TU Delft students to be involved in current projects with a small effort in order to enable the transition from TU Delft research into a concrete application in a place where it’s needed most urgently, thus accommodating a win-win perspective, (www.students4sustainability.nl).
So S4S’s desires are reaching their goal. The organization will deliver the greenhouses in the next few years to make it possible to create a sustainable business. It is our job to assure S4S of a good organization in Bondo, that uses the greenhouses in the proper way.
