Current situation Loreto Convent: cows & stables

Cow dung can be used to produce biogas. To do calculations for a biogas system, insight in the current situation is to be gained. We have talked to the school’s principle and an independent company about the existing conditions and information needed to do calculations.

Loreto Convent has 14 cows that walk freely in the fiels during daytime. At night they are kept in stables. Currently some of the manure is collected and used as fertilizer.

The photos attached help gaining insight on the present state.

Cows at Loreto Convent

Biogas can be produced from various sources. Agricultural waste, animal manure and human waste are among them. For now we will only focus on an installation that runs on cow manure. The potential of an installation running on human waste can be explored in the future.

Bases on the current situation, calculations can be done on the possible size of a biogas installation. The amount and type of animals and where and how they live is important to be able to do these calculations. Also significiant is the breed of the cows and whether they are adults.

The school’s principle told us following. Loreto Convent has 14 cows that walk freely in the fields, at night they are kept in stables. The cows are used for their milk, which is being used in the students’ tea. Besides the school keeps about 600 chickens and rabbits in cages. There is a farm keeper who looks after the animals, he could also be the one to look after a biogas installation. Currently some of the manure is collected and used as fertilizer.

To gain more insight, some photos are provided. These show the cows and stables at Loreto Convent.
