Texel’s sustainability will be studied on two levels of analysis:
- The system: Texel is a geographical unity and social community that will be studied as a socio-technical system. A socio-technical system pertains to theory regarding the social and technological aspects of society. As a team of about 50 students they will design a sustainable Texel and investigate what is needed to achieve that.
- The sub-system: on Texel specific challenges for sustainability are being faced. Groups of 4 students will study sub-systems of Texel that face particular challenges. These sub-systems are listed below. Note that energy is not on the list, since that ambition is clearly articulated and quite some studies have been done on that sub-system already. Please note that energy has to be taken into account and lessons should be learned from developments towards sustainable energy on Texel so far when working on assignments. Each group is responsible for the research on one of the sub-systems.
The system level gives context to the sub-system level. Research on the sub-system takes place each week for each group. Every student spends on average about 14 hrs/week on doing research.
In the bubble week on Texel we will analyse linkages between sub-systems as well as between sub-systems and the system level. This is visualized below.
