Cultural Differences

During our internship we will probably encounter some cultural differences. This might lead to some funny or awkward situations. We already investigated some cultural differences and we will update this article with our own experiences.

In Ghana it is not polite to ask a lot of questions. If you ask too many questions, they will think that you do not trust them. They might even find it offensive. We have to keep this in our mind. We will be patient and have trust the people that help us.

Patience is very important in Ghana. The Ghanaian people are not as strict and do not have such a tight schedule as the Dutch. In Ghana they say that patient people are wise and achieve what they wished for, because they have the time to make it happen.

Older people have more authority in Ghana, because wisdom comes with age. When there is for example a conflict it is normal to involve an older person as mediator. Based on his age, he is always right.

Tje Ghanaian culture is very welcoming, hospitality is an important part of their culture. If you ask them if they want something in return, they will probably say it is not necessary. However it is usual to give something (not necessarily money) in return, as a token of appreciation.
