Anke van Hal (20/11/2015)

Prof. Anke van Hal is a Professor of Sustainable Housing Transformation at the Faculty of Architecture of TU Delft. She has been the first one to create a fully online course in the university, so her knowledge on ICT management and impact is valuable input to design for (digital) presence

Summary of the interview:

The main ideas of the interview can be summarized as follows. They reinforce some thoughts we already had before the interview.

  • You cannot teach without discussion. You need a combination of both: individual on-line learning and physical meetings to discuss issues and receive feedback
  • You need to feel as if you are in the same room. As we have discussed during the lectures, it is a challenge to feel presence. On-line technologies e.g. skype can make you feel closer.
  • Incorporation. There is a need to involve people: students, organizers… In order to send a message that is absorbed
  • Active learning. There is a need to receive feedback that forces students to question their knowledge, as well as the need of practical application of knowledge.
  • Networking. A positive thing about on-line learning is that creating a network is easy. Several teachers and experts on different fields can contribute to education and diffusion of ideas.
  • Involve. The future system has to help connecting, has to reach people together. It has to form a coalition and act as a linking pitch. For this to happen, effective organization is needed.
  • Children need interaction. She suggests we need to use our week of field research in Texel to gather information and put it into practice by working on a case that integrates all the knowledge and engages children
  • Her 2065 vision. Education in the future will be much more flexible and Internet and new technologies will play a major role. However, physical presence will still be needed. Classrooms will be more modern, with roundtables to gather and discuss. One will have to individually prepare for discussion meetings and then work group will take place. The successful inclusion and usefulness of the new equipment and technologies will need cooperation.
  • Engagement. What is our goal for 2065? What do we want? What is needed to involve and engage people? There is a negative side of on-line learning which is risk of negative and depressive feelings of students for not changing place and moving outside the island
  • Imagine how it is to live in an Island…This feeling of enclosure might be reinforced by living in a small island. We need to feel how it is to live in an Island, which is quite different from a big, open and well-communicated city.
