4.2. An innovative technological solution

Why change is needed

As said in previous section, the current situation is a decreasing amount of true Texelaars that are emotionally connected to Texel and a decrease in higher levels of education followed and work done by Texelaars. In order to get higher education or higher levels of job opportunities, people as of now need to leave the island, leading to less and less ‘Texel identity’. In order to mitigate this downward spiral, interventions to the system have to be made.

How this change will be achieved

From the technological trends and future possibilities as discussed in precious sections, especially ‘new ways of learning and working’, digital education such as ‘feedbackfruits’, ‘adaptive learning’, the ‘boot camp model’ and the ‘designed space for improved connection between secondary school and MBO’ are of interest. They will all facilitate flexible schedules, with some fixed moments of physical presence needed at the mainland.

By adding the new way of learning and working childeren, youngstars and adults will become more indepandend, they choose what and when they want to learn. With a digital schoolboard, people are free to enrol in al type of courses. By following different courses, all information is gathered in digital learning environments. Tasks, test and discussions about the lecture will be online. Tough they meet their teachter ones a week. Combined with the adaptive learig system, the education has a real personal and induvidual task. Because, the meeting moment can be used to the max, the knowlegde is their, discussions about specific questions and task can inprove the quality and helps remembering the lecture.

Before it's possible to start thinking how secundairy school and higher education can be achieved, the problem with the primary school need to be solved. There is a reason why their is a extreem low amount of students who reach HAVO or VWO on the secundairy school. Because each town has his own primary school, the amount of children is very low which result in mixed classes and very low adaption of studymaterial. When starting "Online Adaptive and Active learning", children can stay home for 3 day's a week. They need online support and additional support of their parents to get the homework done. During school days, the childeren need to travel further, but have larger classrooms with children which are on a same educational level. The schooldays are very interactive, fun and with a lot of pratical activities, meeting with practitioners and having exersion. By making the educational fun, with a higher quality and more space to explore and enrich the brain it supposed that childeren becomes smarter and able to reach HAVO or VWO level for the secundiary school.

By addapting the same system for secundairy school, students will learn in a more practical way and have a storng connection with their community and island. To enrich their possibilties and sens of the global word high schools, HBO institutions and universities will cooperate on a national level, to give lectures on general topics for all students. Local high schools add local topics, among others for Texel a sustainable island topic. This will of course be facilitated by provided smart boards, laptops, simulation devices, etc. This will most likely keep the students of secondary schools, HBO’s or university at the island, but still have the opportunity to have education from the mainland. They are sometimes physically there, but mostly digitally. They will have more time to spend on leisure at the island, with their families or be involved with local projects or associations. The Texel identity will then be maintained, so we assume. So this will give rise to higher quality education from the mainland, while the youngsters can stay at the island. Meanwhile, they can follow local courses focussed on the sustainability of the island. Teachers will have to adapt their courses, institutions will have to collaborate on a national level. The government will have to creditise the new national courses. Youngers can learn more at home, at their own free will, contributing to the ‘adaptive learning’ concept. Moreover, they will have more contact with their parents, because of the growing trend of working at home. It will be a true systems change, facilitated by the digitalisation.

In addition, to give a second and last example, the innovation of ‘designed space for improved connection between secondary school and MBO and HBO will lead to better education, contributing to an improved business climate on the island. This will attract young people with an improved economy and fill up the lack of trained personnel. Next to this, it make the connection with the buisness world more smoothly what can contribute to the possibilties of working form home for multinalional compagnies.

What will change

When all these interventions are done, more and higher educated people are expected to live and work at and/or from Texel and the economic competitiveness of Texel will rise. Also, these people will feel true Texelaars, leading to more and more initiated sustainable projects for the island. Sustainable project are said to be portals towards system change so this is essential. Moreover, more and more youngsters and students are expected to live at the island, leading to improved family life and other social activities such as sports and being a member of certain associations within the island instead of at the mainland. Now, the identity and economic spiral goes up and the tourists are contained but present.
