Continuation of the project

The duration of the internship was only three months, which is too short to complete the entire project. Moreover, the project’s goal is a long-term cookstove business and so the project has to be continued after we leave. The project consists of three phases; the research phase, the prototyping phase and the sales phase. During our stay in Gha- na we completed the first two phases. We also prepared the sales phase by writing the business model.

The next step

To continue the project, KITA should now execute the business model. This way they will set up and run the cookstove business. This means that they will have to design and print information folders to create awareness amongst the kenkey makers. Workshops on how to use the cookstove should be organized. The KITA students should be informed about the possibility to get involved in this business and clear agreements with the welder should be made. When this is done, the business is set up. Kenkey makers can request for a cookstove and it will be delivered by KITA as soon as possible. Lovans is going to be responsible for the clean cookstove project once we are gone. He will continue to work with the KITA students that already took part in the project.

Keep improving

It is very important that KITA keeps improving the design of the cookstove during the sales phase. They should use the feedback of the customers to continually improve the design. For example, the first users already gave the feedback that the pot is not com- pletely stable on the grid now. This should definitely be improved. KITA can for example think about using a metal ring instead of a grid to stabilize the pot better.

Further collaboration with the TU Delft

It is important that KITA continues this project when we are gone. We believe that KITA is now able to set up a cookstove business; all resources to do so are available, partly provided by the TU Delft students of the last two years. We do not think that the collaboration between the TU Delft and KITA is necessary for the continuation of this project. However after a few months KITA and the TU Delft can evaluate the progress of the entire cookstove business and decide whether to continue the collaboration for the cookstove project or not.
