Kenya: Carpentry Workshop at Sustainable Rural Initiatives Kisimu

We are Bart Simkens, Dominique Berck and Katie Froeling and we are going to Okana in Western Kenya to work together with the non profit, non-governmental organization Sustainable Rural Initiatives (SRI). SRI is working to improve the quality of life for rural communities. It uses an integrated approach to poverty eradication. This is based on the understanding that addressing rural poverty requires a multidimensional approach. They specifically work with rural community groups to unveil and support them to benefit from the potentials and opportunities amidst them. All the profits that are made will immediately be put back into the local economy and social transformations are be encouraged. With this vision, SRI supports the idea of a civil society.
At this moment, a carpentry workshop is operating at SRI. For now that is the only initiative that has been engaged and will be the lead project for SRI. We, as students being part of the minor International Development & Entrepreneurship, are going to help the carpentry workshop by expanding their network and generate more income and getting them more self-sustainable.
